Run Club Update: Safety Tips for Running During UK Unrest

At Evolute, the safety of our community is our top priority. Due to the ongoing unrest in the UK, we have decided to temporarily pause our women's run club activities to ensure the well-being of our members. As we navigate these challenging times, we want to keep our community informed and provide practical advice on staying safe if you choose to run.

Run Club Update

Given the current situation, we are pausing all activities for our women's run club. This decision prioritises the safety of our members, and we will resume activities once the situation stabilises. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time and will keep you updated on any changes.

Tips for Staying Safe While Running

If you decide to run during these turbulent times, taking precautions is essential to ensure your safety. Here are some practical tips:

Stay Informed and Check Local Protests

Before heading out, stay updated on the latest news and local developments. Check for information about protests or unrest in your city on the day you plan to run. Many news outlets and social media platforms provide real-time updates about such events. Avoid areas where protests or disturbances are scheduled to reduce the risk of facing unsafe situations.

Run During Daylight Hours

Opt to run during daylight hours to enhance your visibility and safety. Daylight reduces the likelihood of encountering dangerous situations and makes it easier to see and be seen. Wear reflective clothing to increase visibility if you must run at dawn or dusk.

Carry Personal Safety Alarms

Consider carrying a personal safety alarm or whistle with you during your run. These devices can be crucial in alerting others if you are in a threatening situation. They can also help deter potential threats and provide a means of calling for help if needed.

Wear Identifiable and Reflective Gear

Wear clothing to ensure you are visible to others. This not only helps in low-light conditions but also makes you more noticeable in potentially unsafe situations. Reflective gear is especially important for evening or early morning runs.

Carry a Phone and Emergency Information

Always carry your phone, and ensure it's fully charged before heading out. Have emergency contact information readily accessible, and consider carrying a portable charger for extended runs. Inform someone close who you trust about your running route and estimated return time.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Stay vigilant and aware of your current surroundings while running. Avoid distractions such as headphones, which can make you less aware of your environment. Trust your instincts—if something feels off or unsafe, change your route or cut your run short.

Run with a Partner or Group

Whenever possible, run with a partner or a small group. There is safety in numbers, and running with others can help you stay informed and react quickly to any unexpected situations. Many local running communities may also organise group runs or share updates on safe running practices.

Adjust Your Running Schedule

Consider adjusting your running schedule to avoid times when unrest is more likely. Running early in the morning or later in the evening might help you avoid peak times and potential trouble spots. Flexibility in your schedule can also enhance your safety.

Have a Backup Plan

Be prepared to alter your route or cut your run short if necessary. Having a backup plan and being ready to seek safe shelter in case of an emergency can be crucial. Stay flexible and adaptable to ensure your safety.

While our women's run club activities are temporarily on hold, we remain committed to the safety and well-being of our community. We encourage you to stay informed, be cautious, and take necessary precautions if you choose to run during these challenging times. We look forward to resuming our run club activities once it is safe to do so. During this time we hope you all remain safe and take care.
